Marty Supreme
“I have a purpose. And if you think that’s some sort of blessing, it’s not. It means I have an obligation to see a very specific thing through, and with that obligation comes sacrifice” - Marty Mauser, 1952 NYC
I loved Marty Supreme. I want to watch it twenty more times. It’s a pure portrait of a kid chasing the impossible fueled by an absolute belief in himself and his mission.
It’s so inspiring to watch someone like that. Marty moves with the ultimate urgency, in his mind he simply does not have time. There a scene where he has Rachel call a gangster named Mishkin to try and get two thousand dollars in exchange for his dog. That’s over twenty four thousand today. The attempt falls apart when Mishkin demands to see the dog before paying, Marty hangs up the call in disgust:
“You realize I should be practicing my game right now, right?! Instead of making a mockery of my life in a used car lot making prank calls.”
He is broke, being hunted by criminals, and close to blowing his shot at Japan and all he can think about is that every wasted minute is stealing from the one thing that matters, becoming the greatest ping pong player alive.
Gwyneth Paltrow was incredible, so was Kevin O’Leary. Amazing movie. It forces the question we should all be asking ourselves, what’s your purpose?
Bleed time: 90 minutes
